Canoeing

As a charity we offer activities for all, both for club members and also courses which are open to the general public, schools, youth groups and disabled groups.

We have professional British Canoe Union qualified coaches working on canoe and kayak skills from beginner to world class. The club runs the following courses:-

One Star course

This will cover basic paddle strokes and skills. The course takes 6 2-hour, sessions to complete and costs £30 members and £45 non members. We’re running One Star courses on the following dates

Two Star Course

This will hone the skills to be able to participate to instructor course level should you wish or merely take yourself off exploring and picnicking when and where you like. The course takes 8 2-hour, sessions to complete and costs £40 members and £60 non members. We’re running Two Star courses on the following dates:-

Course requirements

The courses are open to anyone however anyone participating must be able to swim. The minimum age for courses is 8 years old although younger children can paddle if properly supervised in smaller groups.

You should also make sure you were suitable clothing which is lightweight and appropriate for the weather conditions. Footwear such as wetsuit shoes plimsoles or trainers must be worn.

Clothes to be avoided are:-

  • jeans
  • woolly jumpers
  • anything that gets heavy when wet
  • walking boots

You will also need to bring a spare change of clothing.

What else do we offer?

Alternatively you may find yourself wanting a place in the next Olympic team. Kelly and Andy Barkway are former British Olympic Sprint Squad members and have already forged the links with the Scientific Sports Lab at UEA and can give the coaching required.

The club also provides more fun activities such as adventure birthday parties (the club has also applied for an Activities Centers License which is required by law to take groups of children canoeing if parents are not present; the AALA can be contacted on 02920755715 for any queries) and a program of canoeing is available in the summer half term school holidays and the summer holidays. Five half day sessions costs £50 per member and £75 non members. The dates and times for these courses are:-

Equipment

The club has many different types of canoes from recreational kayaks and Canadian canoes to elite racing boats. All the boats used for the courses are brand new and thoroughly swamp tested and life jackets are top quality and inspected regularly.. AALA officials inspect regularly unannounced.
