Rowing is great exercise for both serious athletes and complete beginners alike. It gives a full body workout and works both the muscles as well as your heart (cardio) in the same exercise. As your body weight is supported it also means there is little or no stress on your ankles or knees so is perfect for people who’ve had to give up other sports because of knee or ankle injury.
Complete beginners welcome!
The emphasis at Broadland Boat Club is in introducing complete beginners to both rowing and canoeing. Most people will be familiar with rowing machines from the gym or from home but even this level of experience is unnecessary. Almost everyone who rows at Broadland Boat Club was a complete beginner before they joined; the club provides full coaching from ARA qualified instructors as part of your membership to teach you how to row.
Getting on the water
At Broadland Boat Club we’ll teach you to row (each member of the boat’s crew has one oar – usually four or eight people in each crew) and scull (each crew member has two oars – usually one or two people in each boat) which will allow you to use any of the club’s boats. We have a number of stable training boats (including a new TS515 training scull) which you can learn in under full supervision before progressing on to faster, more lightweight boats.
It's up to you
You’re free to do as much or as little as you want; many of the clubs member’s just turn up for the occasional social trip on the river whilst others train 6 days a week to compete in races all year round.
Give it a try
Whether you’re looking to find a new sport to compete in, improve your general all round fitness, or just a new social activity then rowing could be the sport for you. Our membership fees are structured to make the sport as accessible as possible with a “try before you buy” policy. You can come down to one of our open days (where you’ll also get the chance to try canoeing) or get in touch with us (click here to use the Contact form) to come down to the club. Your first go is free and, if you still aren’t sure whether rowing is for you, you can come down again a number of times for a small fee which is refundable against your membership fee if you decide to join.
